I am a little behind on blogging lately but wanted to post one last post before 2011 is over. This photo was from my last session of the year that was taken before the holidays were in full swing. It was such a pleasure to spend time with this sweet Italian princess. Congratulations go out to the happy family and all the best for the New Year! May you be blessed with many years of fulfillment and happiness as your family embark on this great new journey of parenthood together with your lovely new daughter. All my best to you. xo

I love everything about the last day of the year. The promise of what a new year has in store for everyone, the celebration of life and hope that is celebrated throughout most of the world we live in. Every year since I can remember I have written out a list of resolutions down for what I hope to accomplish in the upcoming New Year and what I did accomplish the year I left behind. All the lessons I have learned, mistakes I have made, happiness and joy that I have been blessed with, accomplishments, setbacks, etc.

I think that this past year was pretty good to me and my family. It was a year of restoration and rehabillatation for me. I signed up for a gym membership last year, just before this past year began and have been fumbling my way towards a healthier new lifestyle. For the first part of the year I was struggling with getting into routine and the past 4 months I have managed to frequent the gym 50 times! It is so amazing to see that number on the sign in screen accumulate and all the new found energy I have is so worth it! I also learned to knit after years of attempting it and giving up. Taking a class did help me a long and so far I have made 3 hats, 2 scarves, 5 pairs of mittens and 2 pairs of fingerless gloves. Yes, I have been busy :). Knitting is very similar to yoga. It helps keep me focused and my thoughts calm and positive while minding my children. Creating something that is useful, pretty and will keep my family warm this winter brings me happiness.

My hopes and aspirations for the new year are to start a Happiness Project. I happened to see Gretchin Rubin talking about her book on Breakfast Television one morning last year and just had to get my hands on her book. It is so easy to forget oneself in the routine of life as an adult and this book was just what I needed to snap out of the rut I was in. So far I have taken some of her own project ideas and made them my own and guess what, I am happier, feel more alive and fulfilled and am looking forward to putting more of her ideas into practice in my own life. So here is to eating healthier, getting regular excerise, improving my french skills, making plans for great things to do in the future both near and far, loving my family and helping teach my children to live to be happy individuals by example in their day to day living. I don't think her book will leave my side any time soon...any time I start to feel that old familiar frustration with life creep in, I want it near by to remind me that I have the power to turn things around. Oh and I might just start another 365 project tomorrow :). Wish me luck!

I am taking a well deserved break from the business of photography. I have struggled with this idea for the past year and a half and have come to terms with it this year. The weight has been lifted and I feel I can finally live my day to day existence with clairity and lightness. Running a business from home is wonderful and empowering but somewhere along the way, my young family grew and became busier then I could have ever imagined and the demands of the business were overwhelming to put a healthy balance between the two. They need me more then the time I could give them trying to run the business, even on a part time basis. I don't want this time to look back on to be full of regrets.

The reality is part time equates to full time in this industry if I wanted to even get a small amount of business to just keep afloat at this stage in my business, with all the cost of product and equipment, training and time. Despite what many think about this business, it is more then just a push of the shutter button and burning a disc and fun times. Although it is a labour of love, the time spent on email and phone correspondence, continual learning, cost of equipment for cameras, lenses, computers and computer programs, advertising, website, processing orders, mailing, time, etc...it all ads up. I will miss it but for the time being am thoroughly enjoying my role as a mom and wife to a preschooler and kindegartener. I am also exploring my options this year and just might find myself going down a new and uncharted path in my life altogether. I am a firm believer in life having many wonderful chapters and avenues to explore and that once one door closes, another window or door of opportunity will open. Photography will always be there for me but for the moment, it will be for me and my family and a very limited amount of sessions over the next year. I will hopefully stop by this blog from time to time and post random and beautiful moments I have captured to keep up with my love of photography, which is a constant in my life anyway. I want to thank everyone who was a part of my photography experience over the past two years. It was great to meet new families and their little ones. This part I will really miss.

Next year promises more time for me and I may revisit and re-evaluate the overall business to suit my availibility. With more time for me to cope with the obstacles and stresses that probably wouldn't be there in the first place if I had uninterrupted time. My photography business was started, afterall, to be able to stay at home with my girls while they were young, not make money to send them away from me at a daycare. I am not sure I am ready for my little ones to be in school full time yet :(. Such a conflicted feeling just thinking of it even though it is not for another year. There are so many days or moments where I fight with the idea of wanting some more time to myself to be able to see this business bloom, but then relish in the fact that this stage of my family is so fleeting and I will miss it very much.

Miles Away From Home ~ Durham Region Photographer

My husband and I had the opportunity of a getaway together in San Fransisco last weekend for our anniversary. I have to say, I am in love with that city (and my husband)!! Despite not packing for the cooler temperatures and having to buy jackets, it was 30 C heat we were leaving behind in the Greater Toronto Area after all, we had a great time! All the history, sites, sounds and tastes the city had to offer were wonderful. We will definitely be going back there again one day. We will also be doing more tours of places we have yet to discover. The amount we learned on the city tours there (not one, but two!), was amazing and with both, we learned different things that we wouldn't have learned had we not taken the second.

Our first evening there began with a walk around the city and dinner at The Stinking Rose. If you are a lover of garlic, this restaurant is for you. It had atmosphere and a variety of garlic dishes, even garlic flavored ice cream. We were seated in a cozy little mezzanine that made for a very romantic setting with a fountain bubbling away in the corner, patio lanterns and candles to add to the ambiance. I was still battling a lingering summer cold so it was just what I needed to help boost my immunity, however stinky we may have been the next day ;). At least no vampires would cross the two of us while we were there.

On our first full day there, on our anniversary, we started with a bite to eat on Nobb Hill and then a tour of the city followed by lunch at the infamous Boudin, on FisherMan's Warf. We had to try out their carved out sour dough bowl of clam chowder. Yum! After that we had an early evening tour of Alcatraz. I was a bit exhausted by the time we made it back to the hotel from the tours and a bit of jet lag. Tears poured out when we were greeted with a special treat from the hotel for our anniversary. Chocolate, fruit and a yummy dessert! We rarely get a chance to be together alone these days. I am sure many new families struggle with the same thing. It is so worth it but this was a real nice break for the two of us to enjoy just each other for a change.

My wonderful and crazy husband has this thing for this pose wherever we go. It is part of his charm ;). That and standing on a ledge that backs onto a 10 ft drop to a steep hillside. Didn't someone just fall over Niagra Fall's last week?!!

Summer Bliss ~ Durham Region Family Photographer

I hope that everyone has been enjoying their summer :). I can not believe that in less then two weeks, school will begin and our busy fall schedule starts up once again. Not that we haven't been busy this summer, because it has been by far the busiest one I can recall in years. Two little ones and no naps in sight have been keeping me on my toes and this year we have been keeping up with them in terms of day trips, camping, etc. to keep them entertained and curious about our world. Alas, this month has taken a toll on me with a summer cold and uncertain bug bites from our outdoor adventures, but I am overall, very pleased with how this summer turned out as of yet.

Below are some pics from our day trip to Center Ville on Center Island in Toronto a couple of weeks ago. I haven't been to Center Island since I was little and love all that it has to offer, especially for our girls at their age. I lived downtown Toronto for a year, many years ago and loved taking the ferry to the islands on the weekends in the spring, summer and fall months to escape the concreteness of our city. It was so nice to have that little oasis so close to the city. We loved it so much, we plan to go again next week, while it is still open.

We were greeted by beautiful gardens that attracted gorgeous monarch butterflies, a sure sign that fall is close by.

Both girls really enjoyed a rest by the water while daddy waited in line for tickets to the rides.

Life is different with children but having these little blessings has brought out the best in each other that I could not imagine any other way of living. They have created a purpose driven life where I want to paint the world a better place and help raise our little ones to do the same and hopefully make a difference somehow. I love this journey with you, my husband, my love. I love that I want to talk to you every day while you are away from home, even though I know you will be back that evening. I love that I miss you when you are gone, even if you are just out running errands. I love that I know you feel the same. You are a great father to our children and a wonderful husband.

Here is to 6 wonderful years of marriage and to our future together from this day forward.

Babies are truly a blessing in this world full of such contrasts in beauty and chaos. They are full of hope and promise for a better tomorrow in their learning and guidance we give them. I love photographing them in this tender moment in their life where a true glimpse of innocence and radiance emanates from their very being in this world. Their soft little cries for want of warmth, cuddles, love, comfort and food are priceless to hear. Their peaceful slumber is enviable and so heartwarming.

Despite being so bright eyed for most of her session, this sweet baby girl from Sunday's session gave out to the land of nod as soon as she was wrapped warmly in my green cocoon and we headed outdoors. The heat wave helped as well as it was hotter outside then in my little space, even with a space heater. Note to self, just open side door in this weather to heat up the room ;). Here are a few of my favorites from the session. To the very happy parents, I can't wait to show you more!!

I just had to share this image below. This is how small she really is. Most of my photos of her depict a larger baby as I have photographed her close up to capture all her wonderful details. She in reality is very petite, weighing a little over 6 lbs. xoxoxo I can't wait to see her again!!

It's Summer!! ~ Durham Region Family Photographer

It has been a busy few weeks for us and yesterday was the last day of school! It is hard for me to believe that my daughter will be going into SK next year! I am already sweating a little at the thought of the next two months though. I know it will take a week or two to get into a groove of things with my soon to be 5 year old at home all week. She is a very active, smart, strong willed little girl who requires a lot to keep her busy and happy, and me on my toes. I am hoping to avoid the TV as much as possible this summer and to keep up on all the learning she did at school through a home reading and writing program of our own that we have been working on already. I have a little treasure chest set up for her as an incentive for when she completes her charts. She is already really excited for that and begging to see the dollar store treasures :). I also have lots of fun plans for this summer that I hope to follow through. Trips to local parks, the zoo, the ROM, camping, etc. I type this all while they are both sitting in front of the television, watching Madagascar II, lol... I know, I faltered already.

It has been a long and busy week for me. I have managed to complete all of the Crazy Baby Accessories and Sarita Baby mini session galleries to present today and tomorrow to clear off my plate for our camping trip this weekend. The beach is calling my name!!! The bugs can stay away though ;). It will be a nice kick off to our summer and really nice to celebrate Canada's birthday in the great out doors. The girls really love camping and can hardly wait!

Sigh....

Now to get packing. Here is a few pics from this mornings backyard adventures of the girls. It ended in screams and a nap, but it sure does look idyllic and fun to me :). Hopefully they will forget the little sibling rivalry when looking back at these photos.

Looking up into the trees is such a wonderful feeling on a warm, summers day. I let them each have a little of their candies from a party they were at on the weekend. I hope they will appreciate me when they are older as they rarely get to eat candy.

Here is Matt's father's day gift picked out by Madison. She saw it and had to have it, calling it "Gnomeo". Both girls were so proud to show it to him on father's day, along with a new garden we have been working on the past few weeks together. We just need to find a Juliet to go along with him for those evening rendezvous's in the garden ;).

Helping Hearts ~ Durham Region Children's Photographer

On Saturday I had the pleasure of meeting 11 month old Alejandra and her mother for a Helping Hearts session. Below is a little history on what makes Alejandra such a brave little girl. She is so adorable and was full of sweet smiles for me throughout the session.

"Alejandra our daughter was born with Spina Bifida. A neurological birth disorder which required her to have an operation at birth to close up the opening in the lower part of her spine. We spent the first month of her life in Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto. Then 4months later she was readmitted to treat hydrocephalus, extra fluid that builds up in the ventricles of the brain. Also during all this time she is being treated for a club foot. What makes us special and unique is our daughter! She is my brave little angel and she gives me strength every day. Through everything she always has a smile to share and is very forgiving! She teaches me to be a better person."

Helping Hearts is a wonderful Canadian organization, created by Melissa and Michelle, with the goal of being able to provide free photography sessions for families with children who are suffering a life-altering illness or disability. Over the last couple of months we have acquired an entire team of photographers who are dedicated to donating their time to Helping Hearts because they believe in sharing the gift of photography with as many families as possible.

Throughout a child's life, most families probably wouldn't expect their child to become ill, and possibly be hospitalized, or confined to home. This journey can cause a roller coaster of emotions for families – confusion, sadness, hope, celebration, and grief. During these times of transition, families may not have considered how important it may be to preserve the precious changes in their children. The finale is finally ready for Part III of the Crazy Baby Accessories and Sarita Baby mini sessions!! I want to thank everyone for this opportunity. It was a really fun day and it was a pleasure to meet all of you!

Spring Mini Sessions Part II ~ Durham Region and GTA Baby and Family Photographer

This little girl is the strongest person I have ever met and has shone so brightly despite her trials over the past two years that she has touched the hearts of so many. Her parents are so amazing and strong too. The light of the early evening sun shone perfectly for these photos of her.

Below is a cute, reversible cap and casual hoodie that is made by Crazy Baby Accessories with a pacman pattern lining the hood and inside the cap to match.

Can you just hear it? The most favorite word that most every toddler seems to learn right away...."No." LOL :). This was one of a couple of photos I managed to get of this little one staying still. I love it! I didn't get a chance to bring along a lot of my noise makers that day so some of my tricks to grab a toddlers attention were missed. Sometimes breaking out into song doesn't always work, especially when there is room to explore.

Beginnings ~ Durham Region Maternity and Baby Photography

I am so happy for you Jessica and Mike!! Not only have you found the love that you share for one another but you are both about to embark on the most amazing journey we are privileged to have. I can't wait to meet your little princess!!

Spring Flowers "I Heart Faces" ~ Durham Region Photographer

Although this is a photo from last spring, these flowers have bloomed again this week. I am entering this photo in this weeks iHeartFaces photo fun challenge (non-contest) for Spring Flowers. It is one of my favorites from the many I have taken of our gardens. I love spring time and am so grateful for the previous owners of the house we live in. They created the most glorious of gardens that just burst with the beauty of May flowers.

One of my favorite pass times as a child was to throw rocks in the water at the beach. It is so relaxing to listen to the gentle waves breaking on the shore and I could spend hours upon hours scouring the shore line for smoothed down pieces of green glass and pretty rocks to add to my collection. My own children share this love and were so excited when I mentioned that we were going. We got to check out Heyden Shore's new park makeover too. The girls loved it!

Happy Spring, Time for a Change! ~ Durham Region Photographer

I hope that everyone enjoyed their Easter weekend! Easter has always been a favorite holiday of mine. I love all the new life sightings as the season enfolds, the warmer weather and the show of colours from spring flowers starting to embrace the light. What perfect way to celebrate it then with family. Having children to relive traditions of egg hunts, chocolate, bunnies, and an introduction to biblical tales is a joy. We kicked off our celebrations with some hard boiled egg decorating on Friday. Both girls loved dipping them into different colours and then used the left over food dye to make pastel painting and had lots of fun creating a great big mess in the kitchen :). A friend of mine posted her Easter egg making fun this week and used the eggs in baggies with the dye. I think I will do this next year. Quelle pagaille! :) Of coarse, there were no newspapers on hand when I went to set up so that didn't help.

I was going to post these Easter pics on Monday but less then 10 minutes into my children's quiet time I happened to hear a clink of metal above me, coming from the bathroom. My heart raced. My daughter Abby has been taking an interest in scissors this past week, cutting Easter photos out of flyers for crafts with our assistance, so hair was the first thing that came to my mind. Sure enough, as I neared the foot of the stairs this is what I found. She also knew I had an appointment at the salon on Tuesday so hair must have been on her mind.

Oh boy! I could handle one, but both my girls!!
Sigh...I know it is only hair and it grows back and it will be one of many stories we will laugh at in the future. They got a time out in their room while I called around to family to help me calm my nerves. I was so upset at the time :(. I got over it quickly and initially was going to run out and get it fixed for them but with the advice of my Mother-in-Law, I decided to let them, Abby specifically, live with it for awhile. It is a good thing that she doesn't seem to mind it and is too young to be aware of herself appearance yet. She still thinks it is funny but told me she was sorry and won't do it again (fingers crossed). For the next few months they will both be sporting hair clips and headbands until it grows back.

Lately my days seem to be set to permanent fast forward at the rate in which my children are growing on me and keeping me on my toes, I have barely any time to keep up with my blog. I have a corner in our kitchen in which I have been marking down the progress of both girls growth each week, sometimes twice a week and am always amazed at the results. Some days are just a sliver taller and other days as much as a whole cm or more!! I keep telling them to slow down so I can savor their littleness as it seems to be slipping by between my fingers like sand. This is one of the reasons I have stepped back from the blog these days. I am still here, just very busy trying to savor these moments and capturing memories, as usual :). I am stopping by today to broadcast a couple of different casting calls I have going on for the upcoming warmer months. I am happy to announce that I am in search of 2 newborn models this summer to freshen up my portfolio. The newborns need to be 10 days and under and born during the months of July and August to hopefully get some outdoor shots in as well as indoor (weather permitting). 52 Week Project: Week 3 ~ Durham Region Photographer

My daughter begged me to give her bangs last month. I had them when I was little and decided to change it up for my girls but secretly, I miss them. The problem is that as soon as I get them for myself they start to bug me and I end up pinning them back until they grow out again for months. For now, I live vicariously through her.

My little one deeply engrossed in a flash card activity. I was trying to capture her lips as she said "moon". They fan out and make me smile every time she says it. I ended up getting a good one of her beautiful eyelashes.

52 Project Week One / Two "Spring Break"~Durham Region Photographer

I am a little behind on my blogging these days. I promised myself that I would pick back up on my personal photo project somehow and have decided to start a 52 week instead of a 365 project, starting last week. Some weeks may have more then one photo entered then others but at least one photo a week must be included in this project.

My first of many to come is from our first family vacation last week. Both my husband and myself were apprehensive of taking the girls at such a young age since they are still so dependent on us and can be trying at the best of times but we opted to enjoy seeing those first impressions of experiencing the ocean and the tropical breeze and the sense of togetherness over the fact that it will probably not be as relaxing as we may have needed. I am so glad we decided for it. We found an amazing resort that I would highly recommend anyone try if they are bringing along a young family to a sunny destination (email me for a link if you want more info). The first couple of days were a bit of a challenge. Day one was rough catching up on lost sleep from a day of travel but after about day 3 we were all in a nice groove and enjoying the sun, beach, food and the "Kids Club" that had me breathing a huge sigh of relief. I think I needed this trip to loosen the invisible strings of over protectiveness I have on both my girls. Madison has rarely been out from under my wing in her 2 short years that it was hard to leave her behind at first but after seeing the poof of smoke behind her as she bolted happily through the gate the second time we brought her there I felt instantly at ease. It helped to know how good Abby is with her sister and see the nurturing side come out in her even more while we were there. I could still only leave them for no more then 1 to 2 hours each time but that is still a pretty big development for me.

Below are a couple of favorite pics from our small excursion about a 2o minute drive away from the resort. We opted to try for a dolphin encounter with Abby but alas, she fell asleep on the bus and was not a happy camper for the experience. Although I did not go into the encounter myself, just being around these happy creatures made both Madison and myself smile from ear to ear. The trouble was, keeping her from jumping into the water to join them, she was so excited to see them :). Dolphins have always been a favorite animal of mine. At one time I wanted to be a Marine Biologist, along with being a Veterinarian until a friend of mine started to explain all the other gory things that come along with the job aside from years of schooling. Mind you, this was at the age of 8. I still think I could have managed but the discipline in education would have required more patience that I don't think I have.

I had every intention of getting a really nice family portrait on the beach with coordinating outfits for everyone but our hotel room was quite remote and a walk away that by the time we were all ready, the sun had set :(. Oh well, we had such a great time together and really enjoyed the warmth. This winter has been very long, longer then any I remember, but being at home has probably intensified it for me. I have to say, being a SAHM (stay at home mom) is a wonderful experience, but it is hard work and very isolating. I still think going back to an official job away from home can be easier then being on from the moment you open your eyes until the little ones finally give in to sleep at night. I am not complaining, I wouldn't trade this time for anything, but it isn't an easy experience for anyone who would think otherwise, regardless of whether you have one, two or four children. It isn't all about eating bonbons all day and chatting with other house wives...those are merely coping mechanisms for the isolation and need to keep up with the kids. It has very little recognition in our society and we have the most

important jobs that anyone could ever have. We are responsible for the next generation...talk about pressure to perform. The kicker is, no matter how well we do our jobs, we can not always predict or control how our children act or turn out. We just have to have faith that we are laying down the best possible foundation for them to build on and we make so many mistakes as we learn. Such a learning curve to have, unlike any other.

Week Two:

Our official March Break is this week. We are all on vacation mode and the girls were spoiled with up to 2 hours or more of exercise each day from our trip that I was all about the kid play places, bike riding, play dates, etc this week. It was nice to reconnect with friends that we haven't seen in awhile and to come back to gorgeous spring weather. An interlude to spring...I love it!!

Here is a snap from this week with our point and shoot camera. I am no expert at the point and shoot equipment so it isn't a great photo. The girls love going to Creative Play in Ajax. It sure was hopping with March Breakers when we were there earlier this week.

Alas, coming home to such sad news about Japan has me in deep contemplation about our world and all the natural disasters that have occurred recently. We were sheltered by the news while we were away and saw footage as we were picking up our baggage at Pearson Airport on Monday morning. My heart sank. The sad part is that while we were on the beach one of the days, the waves had me thinking about tsunami's and how scary they must be and then to learn of such devastation actually happening across the world had my heart sink. I sat down the first night and watched footage on Youtube. Unbelievable and so sad.

I Heart Faces Challenge ~ Durham Region Family Photographer

I have been meaning to participate more in the challenges of iheartfaces since I stumbled upon it. Since we have a new schedule and stage in our family to adjust to with little to no down time these days, I haven't had the chance to do much outside of family life and work. I am sad to see "la petite dodo" stage slowly disappear completely with Madison. On the days that Abby is home she doesn't want to miss a beat and it carries over to a lot of the days when Abby is in school. I am a firm believer in the nap or quiet time and feel it so important for their development but would rather not fight her to go down. I would be a huge advocate of adult nap time too if it weren't so socially unheard of over here in North America ;).

This week I was drawn to the challenge and dug through my personal photos for something suitable. The theme is "Anything But A Face!" I felt this photo of my girls playing with sidewalk chalk last summer would be perfect for the challenge. It was one of the photos from my failed attempt at a 365 project that I started last summer. I think I will try a new one, only do a photo a week to be realistic and hopefully be able to complete it this time.

Happy Family Day ~ Durham Region Family Photographer

This month has been a very long one. Having a long weekend dedicated to family was just what we needed to break through the overwhelming feeling of being encased in winter forever. After a long, grueling week of a mild flu and terrible cold for both our girls, equaling little sleep for all and cleaning a perpetual trail of dirty kleenex, along with disinfecting, loads of laundry and trying to stay sane all the while, this weekend was definitely a blessing to us. With the girls feeling much better and one night away from them (thank you grandma and grandpa :)), our batteries are recharged enough to conquer what mother nature has left in store for us in the next few weeks. I hope that everyone is doing something fun and relaxing with their family day. We managed to take all three of our girls out to enjoy the sun for a walk and toboggan and have since been warming up with some hot cocoa and family flicks together while Madison naps. We even had a nice surprise visit from grandma and grandpa to make this family day complete!

Here are a few snaps from our little outdoor adventure this morning.

I had the chance to watch "Marley and Me" for the first time on Friday night for my birthday. I could have went out for a night on the town but the way my week panned out, the thought of another late night did not appeal to me. I am so glad I watched that movie. It was a heart warming story and just perfect for me. The thing is, at one point during my trying week while trying to get my girls to go down for a much needed nap, our dog started barking relentlessly at someone walking by and well, I was ready to send her away for good because the naps never happened and I was so stressed out and sleep deprived...this very same thing happened in the movie. She is our first baby though and it would never happen, I would miss her barking and gentle way with the kids too much and start to feel the silence almost like an uncomfortable weight settling in our home. Like in the movie, looking back on our family videos and in my own personal photos, she is in there making her appearance with our girls. I couldn't imagine life without her.

I had the honor of meeting this sweet 9 day old baby girl this week. I managed to get a couple of cuddles with her and enjoyed seeing those brand new little grins light up her face. She saved them all up for that cuddle though and was content to drift asleep the rest of the time I was there. It was wonderful! Congratulations go out to her family!!

The Importance of Safety ~ Durham Region Baby Photographer

To all my readers, I wanted to take a moment to write a post about the importance of safety. I just read about a mishap that happened during a photo session that made me literally shout out loud, OMG!! I don't know the photographers name and won't repeat what happened but it has left a lasting impression on me of how important it is for everyone out there to be informed about the importance of safety and photographing babies.

In my experience working with brand new bundles of joy both on my own and while working at a department store studio, babies safety was and is always top priority behind the scenes for every photograph taken. This goes for children of all ages but the newborn stage extra care needs to be taken. They may seem sleepy one moment and just the slightest noise, draft, touch or new smell will cause them to jerk completely into a different position. My first experiences photographing newborns was at the department store studio I managed before having my own children and deciding to do this on my own. There was a hands off policy for the photographers which meant we were so diligent on having the parents participate in the very time limited sessions they were allowed. I am grateful for this experience before going on my own as I got a feel for how hard newborns actually are to photograph and the importance of safety and liability. Most seem shocked when I tell them they are actually harder then working with toddlers, as most just assume that they sleep most of the session. They need lots of extra love and lulling to sleep, cuddling, warmth, feeding and cleaning between photographs. They require extra patience, time and safety.

The scary part about newborn photography and the rise in its popularity is that there are so many new photographers out there who see a picture and try to mimic it without the experience or know how, paying no mind to safety. Certain tools that are essential in newborn photography are a large bean bag for many poses which doubles as a cushion for some poses where babes are slightly elevated (the ever popular babe in mom or dads hand for example) lots of different blankets, a space heater, a spotter - I get my parents involved for this, and a good editing software program for post processing the image. For more difficult poses that are really popular right now the editing software is a must as most of these cute poses are actually 2 or 3 photographs combined together called a composite, where the parents hands have been edited out. These little ones should never be left unattended when on a bean bag or in a prop such as a basket without someone at arms reach. Never jeopardize the safety of these new little humans for a good photograph. It just isn't worth the risk of an injury or possibly worse.

For anyone wishing to get into this business, please, do your research, attend workshops and take every measure possible to keep those little ones safe and unharmed while you gain more experience. I am sure you would be devastated if anything were to happen. For parents choosing a photographer to document your brand new joy, make sure you choose someone with lots of experience in this area.

One of my favorite things about winter is the sound of quiet when fluffy snow flakes fall softly down, filling the world around with white wonder. This afternoon I happened to look out the window and felt like we were trapped in a pretty snow globe. It was so ironic since my daughter was shaking one this morning and out of the blue told me she wished she could shrink real small and get inside it.

I encouraged her with little fuss on her part to go outside for some fresh air with the dog and catch some snow flakes. She loves the snow and was reluctant to come inside she was having so much fun. Here are some snaps from earlier this evening.

In the depths of our bitter Canadian winter, I have found myself needing something to keep me busy while minding my children that doesn't involve my full attention. The moments that they need to play on their own but I don't want to be far. These are wonderful times but also trying in the deep of winter where cabin fever can set in when it is -20 degrees C and going outside is not really fun at all. This is when ones nose hairs start to freeze and in my case, contacts feel like they are going to shatter in my eyes.

I searched through the local craft store yesterday for some pretty yarn to take up crocheting. It has been nearly 7 years since I attempted to learn and managed to make a few simple scarves. I forgot how soothing and rewarding this hobby can be. I have a feeling I am not quite doing it right but what I am doing seems to have come back to me like riding a bike. I also tried my hand with knitting and believe I am getting the two mixed up...I am hoping to take out some library books this week to see if I might be able to learn a thing or two to get me on track and hopefully start making my own gorgeous knit items...starting with a blanket perhaps? What is amazing about this pass time is that it seems to be making such a huge come back in popularity with adults and youth alike. In the photography industry, knit hats, blankets and newborn nests, etc. are all the rage for newborn and baby photography. The simplicity, textures, colours and the feeling of being home made, much like the little wee ones being photographed go perfectly together. I am a tad bit envious of all my friends whom I have met over the years that have a talent in this area and fear that I lack the patience to fully learn a pattern other then simple straight lines. Rome wasn't built in a day and for now I am content to make something simple and, well, you never know, I just might be patient enough to learn more ;).

A new year is upon us and it crept up so quickly. I have much to be thankful for however I am kind of glad to have a clean slate to work with. As I sit and type this, a few rays of sun spilled through the clouds and into our dining room. I had to pause and sit in the warmth to soak it up. I miss the sun and warmth of summer time. I think I better add some outdoor winter activities to my long list of things I want to do this year. I miss the fresh air and know my kids do to.

Below is our first snowmen or "snow sisters" made from the thin layer that covered the lawn last week before it snowed some more. Both girls love to eat snow and were more happy to eat those snow man then help me build them. I had to pry Abby off at one point, silly girl. After a mild day they started to lean in opposite directions.

It is very important to generate a good attitude, a good heart, as much as possible. From this, happiness in both the short term and the long term for both yourself and others will come.

A year in review: Things I am thankful for in 2010.

I had the opportunity to really explore my abilities as a parent to two young girls, a wife and now a small business owner. This year was a process of getting my feet wet and learning with each and every experience. I enjoyed working at an art and skill that I have loved for many years and turning my passion into more.

The clients that I made acquaintance with in 2009 and 2010 were wonderful. Thank you for your trust in me to help you capture these beautiful memories in your life. I am so honored and touched by this and hope to work with you in the future.

I met some amazing people in my industry through various online networking groups and also some local families through my two children that have given me strength in parenting.

My journey in the photography world has revealed a great many things to me about myself and what areas I want to work with more then others. I really love photographing weddings but have decided to limit the amount I take on per year to no more then 4 to focus on newborn babies and family portraiture, as my duty as a mom takes up much of my time these days and they are only young once.

It was a good year and looking back, I am shocked at how much I accomplished while being at home with my children. Christmas!!

One more sleep until the big, roly poly, jolly old St. Nick visits our home while our girls are in dream land of candy canes and "frollipops" as Madison likes to call them. Since I couldn't wait to put the tree up back in November, I just had to change things around this week to bring the feeling of excitement back in anticipation for the girls. Next year I promise to wait until after December 1st to decorate. This will be year two of not learning my lesson. With young children it is almost too much to anticipate the holidays for over a month. The idle threats of Santa not coming if they continue to misbehave start to mean little to them. I swore I would never do that but now that I have a 4 year old to work with that is very strong willed, it just comes out.

Wall Displays ~ GTA Baby, Child and Family Photographer

I have always found that hanging photos in groupings on a wall have always been a challenge to figure out. What sizes do you order from a session or from your own personal photos to be framed? How will they look with existing photos, etc. Where do you place them? I recently came across some great templates that are excellent samples for wall groupings and had to share. Photos used in displays are from recent sessions with Amber Black Photography and my own personal photos. Please do not copy.

One little tip I have learned from a friend with an interior design background is to hang photos from the eye level of a medium height person who is approximately 5.5 - 5.7ft. I have had my husband hang photos before that just seemed off to me since he is much taller and hanging at his eye level. They should appeal to an overall audience to have a good flow as a rule of thumb. These groupings could be displayed over a sofa, in a hallway, dining room, bedroom, basement or even a kitchen, etc. If you have an extra long hallway and want to turn it into a gallery do several groupings in a row! Depending on what type of look you are going with, I have been told before that it is best to keep groupings consistent, all colour for example or all black and white. It depends on your personality though. I like to mix it up a bit as you can see in the two samples above. For frames that are collages though, I tend to stick with one or the other so that it flows. I will have more samples in the near future but for now, I hope this helped!

Seasons Greetings ~ Durham Region and GTA Family Photographer

From my family to yours, we wish you a happy and safe holiday season!

Let the count down begin! Today we start off with our first advent calendar activity and birthday love for Madison by way of decorating our annual Ginger Bread House. This rainy, gray day has all of us feeling a bit sluggish though so it may have to wait until this evening.

I think my self timer portrait skills have improved a lot from last year. The girls had a lot of fun counting down the red timer flashes. You can view last years self timer portrait here and see the improvement ;). They look a little frightened but it was the best we could get from them with all of us together last year.

This is one of my most favorite times of year. The season for giving, for decking halls, baking, spending lots of time with friends and family and eating tasty morsels. I look forward to partaking in the festivities aplenty every year.

With this year being different with the loss of two very special people in our family, I have embraced a new tradition that I have always admired others for doing. The girls and I are taking toys and other items to a local woman's shelter as part of a count down to Christmas day. Every year, we donate non perishable items to various organizations and toys and clothing to the Children's Wish foundation but I really wanted my children to participate by picking out a toy each that they would like and wrap it up and take to the shelter so they can both see where the gifts are going and the children there. I feel Abby is old enough to grasp the meaning behind it and know there are others less fortunate and in need. I got a bit teary eyed when I got off the phone with a worker at the shelter after she informed me there was going to be a lot of children of various ages there over the holidays. I hope that this helps bring some cheer on Christmas morning for the children there. While doing my search into what to do and where to donate I was overwhelmed by the need out there for food, clothing, etc. I would strongly encourage everyone to find a cause to donate to this season and throughout the colder months. It feels great and is such a valuable learning experience for those who have a family.

I had a little fun while editing a recent session this afternoon and felt like doing something different. I find the whole pea in a pod so adorable for babies. They are so tiny for such a short period of time. As I was editing I came across this adorable little vision and fell in love. I normally don't like soft focus unless it is done naturally through depth of field but couldn't resist with this photo. I think it is perfect for this photo!

Capturing the Essence of Childhood~ Durham Region Children Photographer

We are quickly approaching my youngest daughter's second birthday. I choke back silent tears at the thought of how quickly those two years have passed and how much she has grown. She is very aware of the absence of others lately and every morning asks "Where did daddy go?" or "Where did Abby go?", or mommy, etc. She is so sweet and gentle and is so content to play where ever we go, usually happy and all smiles and she loves to snuggle. I cherish every hug and cuddle she gives me and loathe the thought of a day where neither one of my girls will need this from me as much. Tears...again. I shouldn't even write these words, they are just kindling my inner sorrow thinking about the future.

This morning I decided to celebrate her upcoming birthday with a little photo shoot with both my girls in a natural fall setting. I love trying to show the relationship between my girls whenever I take their photos and other families children. I try to avoid taking those cheesy, forced smiles, but love to capture pure happiness, or, on the opposite scale, crocodile tears at the drop of a hat just because. I love the realism of life and want to show my girls what they looked like through smiles, thoughtful expressions and tears. The balloons were a form of bribery to get them to put their new dresses on and to illustrate Madison's upcoming celebration. They add a nice touch to any session involving children though. Here are a few from our fun this morning at a spot very special to me. I used to spend many moments here just contemplating life and my future when I was little.

I took this while trying to set up for a self timed portrait with the three of us...although they are not in focus, I kind of like seeing the sun shine off the leaves in the foreground. I can't believe these will be covered in white in a few short days or weeks.

I managed to capture just one photo with the three of us together using the self timer. I would love a wireless remote so I won't be running back and forth, which is nearly impossible with an almost two year old and and a high-spirited four year old. It wasn't quite what I had in mind as I was very pressed for time with my two little ones but I will take what I can get since I am so seldom in photos being the photographer.

Yesterday was a beautiful, sunny autumn day. Just perfect for a family session in a natural setting with all the bright colours and warmth radiating from the setting sun. It was apparent how much love flowed through this family of four and I couldn't resist their little men. They are so adorable!! I love to let characters come out in children during my sessions for some more candid, natural poses. These were a few of my favorites!!

As we were heading back to the parking lot after a lovely stroll through the woods I spied this special moment between dad and son and couldn't resist. So sweet!

Yoga Sneak Peek ~ Durham Region and GTA Photographer

Last week I enjoyed photographing a different type of session for a change. The session was serene, peaceful and very relaxing to document on camera with a gorgeous fall landscape as our backdrop. I have only tried yoga once. It is way harder then it looks.It was an introductory class with a couple of girl friends. I was really struggling to keep myself in some of the positions for long. My body just doesn't bend like it used to anymore but the energy and feeling after taking that class was invigorating!! It is definitely something I would love to get into soon. The breathing exercises alone would be worth it as a way to combat stress from the everyday. I am guilty of over thinking life's little hiccups all the time and know that this exercise is a great way of clearing your mind of all those things.

This week my very first client photo books came in! I love the layout they chose. Clean and classic. The best part about a photo book versus having only loose prints is that a photo book really shows a story through photos of the progression of the whole day and will be seen as a family heirloom to cherish. I learned a lot working on this book and love the results! Thank you to the newly weds for your patience and kindness while working with me on the layouts. I hope you like the results.

Family Session ~ Durham Region, Toronto Family and Child Photographer

Yesterday evening I had the honor of photographing this beautiful family in a lovely Durham Region location. The weather was beautiful and the leaves on the trees are already showing their gorgeous fall colours that Canada is famous for. While we were there we happened to overhear a wedding ceremony take place. It was so moving to know we were close by to a couple about to embrace the world together in matrimony. I always tear up at weddings, even the ones I photograph so I was really trying to check those tears in for fear that I would be seen as a sap. That's me...a complete sap in the name of love.

Toddlers are so busy and always on the move. I liked the idea of him sitting in the chair to show his size with mom and dad behind him but he had other plans. With the chair still there and him on the move...well, I think I like this even more! It shows a true depiction of the world as a two year old and their curiosity with the world and you still get the sense of his size with the chair.

My So Called Life as a Photographer and a Mom~ Durham Region Photographer

The reality of being a parent and a photographer has never been so apparent as the past few months for me. My children are still quite young but have grown quickly into a very busy stage that has been keeping me on my toes. When I first began this journey into the business side of photography, it was a great adventure, one in which I felt I could do well and had time to focus on around naps that were aplenty or of great length and after bedtime and I really felt I could take on business PT around my family life and at the time felt I could conquer anything. I thoroughly enjoyed being creative and meeting all the couples, babies and families I photographed to date but the reality has sunken in that my time is now extremely limited.

Unfortunately, I am the type of person that if I have to be up early every day and be "on", I also have to go to bed at a decent hour to be able to function well the next day. I am also an introverted or shy person, so being on and talking all day has its effect on me that it may not have on another person. My two little ones tend to fight their own bedtime as most kids do some nights that I am literally exhausted after the struggle of getting them to finally tucker down into sleep and I just need to relax after a very long day with them and the last thing I want to do is sit down to a second job these days. The reality to this business of parenting over a photography business has taken over and I decided to cool it in its tracks to focus on my littles and be true to them without being stressed out to the max over a deadline here or there. Some may still be pending and I apologize and can only offer the excuse that this is my reality right now and I will hopefully clear my plate in the next few days and it is nothing personal towards anyone. Being a mom and being sick in August didn't help matters either. Moms can't get sick!! At least that is how it feels when it happens. We still need to function on a thin thread of energy no matter what and I am still trying to regain my momentum prior to being sick.

I have decided to take a deeper look and focus on myself for a change the past couple of weeks and get my old self respect back in a healthy way so I will be stepping away from my desk (aka dining room table), away from my home and out getting my butt into shape and my life back on track towards something more positive. We are social creatures after all, irregardless of being introverted or extroverted and I miss the world outside these walls. We all feed on others energies to some extent and need it to thrive. Another smile from a stranger or friend goes a long way.

This summer I had the fortune of reading a book I came across on Breakfast Television by Gretchin Rubin called "The Happiness Project". She has some amazing tips on gaining a better, more positive scope on life through a series of projects she took on each month for a year that gave her happiness in different areas in her life. A lot of her projects have been so helpful to my own life of late and make perfect sense, even common sense that can be often ignored or overlooked. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who feels stuck in a rut or going through a hardship in life or just wants a good read. I am normally a happy person, but will admit that there are days, moments, perceived ill impressions and people that can knock me down (I am sure I have been one of those people to someone else too~my apologies if I have) and I can focus on the negative in life. I really do not want to hold onto that energy and let it be me because it isn't who I am or who I want my kids to see. It is so easy to focus on negativity or sadness or get angry with something or someone. It is easier and I totally believe that as I have indulged in it on occasion. I am a fighter though, I always have been and will be swimming my way back up to the lightest lightness with a fierceness that I haven't had for some time and shedding my old skin off, layer by layer. That doesn't mean I won't get knocked down every once in a while but I will fight to keep myself balanced this time around and try to deflect negativity better. We live in Canada and our winters are long and dark, so the struggle to keep that light burning strong will be hard in the next few months coming up.

On a lighter note, as I was engulfed in kid stuff over the summer months, one of the simplest things gave me great happiness and relaxation as I kept busy within ear and eye sight of my two littles. I spent a great deal of time weeding my gardens and lawn in our backyard, a strange form of relaxation for me, and I happened to find a four leaf clover at least once a week back there or on our walks this summer. I know that this may sound like the most childish thing to get excited over, a four leaf clover, but the feeling of being lucky, lucky in love, lucky in life, lucky to have been blessed with two healthy, wonderful girls, lucky to be alive, all would come to mind...and of coarse the idea that I should run out and buy a lottery ticket to see if the luck would get me somewhere else would pop in at some point too ;). The latter of the ideas never really drove me out the door because all the other lucky feelings prevailed and would somehow make me feel like a million bucks each time and put a smile on my face and drive me to give extra hugs to my family. Each clover has been placed in a special spot as a reminder of the feelings they gave me.

How does this all relate to my photography?! LOL, my so called life as a photographer...sigh. I have a very close, dear friend with whom I would spend many nights in our youth chatting to the wee hours of the morning about anything and everything. One subject would lead to the next, mostly to do with our high hopes of our future. Well, that is me now...I have high hopes, but those hopes, dreams and aspirations will be put on hold until my time is more my own and will be focused on getting myself healthy for a change and my family...and now, as I write to myself, or anyone who stumbles across this little blurb of self profession I am rambling on about. I get side tracked very easily is what I am trying to say ;). So here it is, I am continuing on with my break or pause in my photography with little marketing as I have over recent months. The pitfalls and perils will have to wait until I have more then just 2 - 4 hours a week to myself and am not exhausted at night and feeling incredibly guilty for spending time away from my wee little missus. I am still open for business but as some may have noticed on my website and blog, I have priced myself according to what I value my time, talent, years of experience in the industry and know how. I have gained enough experience over the past two years, plus over 10 in the photo industry and schooling to know that the actual photography part where you click the button during the session is all but 10% of what goes into making the experience and the photos something great. The time behind the scenes adds up and it is time that I don't have unless I can afford to pay for daycare for my children to do the job well. So, there you have it, I am still here, but I am here and I am being real to my family and myself. I still LOVE photography, I still love being creative and I still love photographing and working with families and babies....I am still here but I am doing so quietly and as happily as I can.

*We have another photographer beginning to blossom in our family. My 5 year old daughter took the photo of me and our other daughter above. It looks like she has developed an eye for composition already.

I had the pleasure of meeting a sweet seven day old baby boy this morning. I love working with babies of all ages but most of all love photographing newborns! Within the first two weeks of life they are so malleable, sleepy, fresh and miraculous to document. Each session always makes my heart sing no matter how many times I get peed or pooped on :). Their soft cries are lovely and the best part is, I don't have to get up throughout the night for them ;). Kidding...I have been there done that and am still doing it the odd night with my own children. Congratulations to the happy parents on your newest addition to your family! Christmas Came Early ~ Durham Region Family Photographer

Christmas came early today for me! My very first samples of fine art canvases arrived this afternoon. I decided to print a couple of my fine art photos to hang in our dining room to go with our one red wall that seems to follow me wherever I live. I also got one of my favorite photos from this summer of Abby made into art. Please excuse the crappy quality of the photos of them. I snapped these after dark with a really high ISO.

I an really impressed with the quality. Even the backs are done really well. The stoppers are a really nice touch to keep the artwork even when hung.

I can't wait to hang these. They won't be side by side like this on the wall but will be in the same room. I love square format photos and really love this in a canvas.

We had a lovely visit with a very special cousin of mine from up North. It was so great to get to know her more and have someone to watch scary movies with :). The girls were over the moon to see her and have a friend to spend some quality time with. Yesterday evening she was up for a mini session of modeling to get some more material for my teen gallery and as a thank you for helping me out with the kiddos. She is a natural beauty with gorgeous brown eyes and a beautiful smile. We managed to capture some magnificent rays of sun as it began to set in the sky. Yesterday evening I had the pleasure of spending more time with this adorable little baby girl and her very strong and courageous mommy. She is now 3 months old and still smaller then both my girls were at birth. She was born at 32 weeks gestation weighing merely over 3lbs. Many prayers were sent her way from across the world, our family included and this little girl fought hard and strong to be with her loved ones today. You can read more on her story here.

She was bright eyed and alert for most of the session, but I did manage to get a couple of sleepy shots in at the end. This one was my favorite!

4 months of Adorable ~ Durham Region Baby Photographer

Yesterday, I did a mini session for our sweet little nephew who is now already 4 months old. It is amazing how fast time flies and how quickly they grow. His newborn session can be viewed here. He is so adorable and has the most beautiful baby blue eyes!

I was excited to try out one of my new props for his session. This crate was found at my in laws as they were purging a lot of items from their home recently. I love it!

Last week I was in Ottawa to attend the very talented Amber Shereen's newborn posing workshop. I learned so much and got to photograph 4 adorable little models on the first day along with her and 3 other fellow photographers. Amber posed the little ones, showing us her approaches to getting those adorable, sleepy shots and how to get that really nice depth of field that she gets in her photographs. I am so glad I went. I feel more confident for my own newborn sessions and can't wait to try out some of the approaches I learned from her. Thank you Amber for offering such a great and informative workshop! First up was an adorable 10 day old baby boy.

Next we had such an adorable little princess that slept like a dream most of her session and was easily lulled back to sleep with a quick feed. Mom and dad got in on the photo session too.

I have always wondered how to do this head in hand shot and lacked the confidence to try it on my own without seeing it being done first. The baby was so peaceful and perfect to try this one out. It doesn't always go this well for newborn sessions. They are unpredictable little people but this little princess was a dream!

Here was our second baby boy who was close to two weeks old. He took a little coaxing to get back to sleep after initially waking up during his session.

Our last little babe of the workshop was another sweet 2 week old baby boy. For him we learned her approach to studio lighting. The lighting she uses is beautiful and very similar to window lighting only more controlled.

Amber has an amazing setup that consisted of two awesome studio spaces. I have studio space envy. She also uses amazing and tasteful props and offers a classic style with her photography that I really admire and hope to achieve in my newborn work.

I love this crate below out of her many unique newborn props! I am on the lookout for something similar so if you know of any or come across any that are for sale or someone wants to part with let me know!!!

Summer Beauty ~ Durham Region Photographer

While on vacation in North Bay this weekend for a family reunion I had the opportunity to take a lot of personal photos. When I found out my niece was coming I asked her to bring her formal dress to do the long awaited session we planned on doing awhile back. I am so glad she was up for it. The scenery up there is spectacular, wild, beautiful and romantic. I feel these shots will mean so much more to her and my sister being in a spot where we have so many fond memories as children. Here is a sneak peek at our mini TTD senior session from last Saturday.

I had to get a shot with the "No Tresspassing" behind her. It is reminiscent of what it is like to be a teenager on the brink of adulthood but steps away from the freedom and flight that a teenager seeks out while figuring out this life. The look on her face is as though she is confused as to whether to break the rules and make her own...the way she is standing in her dress reminds me of a modern day Alice in Wonderland. I love it!

365 Begins! Day One~ Durham Region Photographer

July 20th, 2010. A beginning to something creative and challenging. No particular reason but to see simple things in life that inspire a vision. Bare with me as I find a special spot to post these posts ;)....

I have decided to start my 365 today since this week I am going to be very busy with my camera. I am really excited to meet and learn from a very talented photographer named Amber Shereen in Ottawa this week and attend her newborn photography workshop. I absolutely love her work and her newborn photography is amazing! I will be armed with my camera to take some photos of her little models she provides in the poses she demonstrates and learn a thing or two about the business side of photography. While I am in town I hope to do a family session for my husbands very close friends of whom are so graciously letting us stay with them for a visit while we are there. I am really looking forward to meeting their little boy again. The year has just flown by to fast! You can find their maternity session from last summer here. I wish we lived closer to do their newborn session.

Now for my very first post for my 365! I couldn't resist taking these when I saw this little nest our neighbor's girls had found at the park. A beginning of something special and simple and beautiful and so soft.

I recently became an observer of a great photography website called www.iheartfaces.com. I have yet to enter any of their weekly challenges. I couldn't resist posting a photo from last weeks fun in the rain of my girls for this weeks "Over My Head Photo Challenge". I hope to participate more in these challenges in the future and also hope to start my very first 365 project soon. My first two attempts weren't successful with life's ebbs and flows. Hopefully this time around I will stick with it! These projects are an excellent way to get those creative ideas going and to be inspired on a daily basis as well as learn your equipment inside out. I would recommend doing this for anyone with an interest in photography.

I am loving these sessions! Here is a sneak peek from Saturday mornings "Cherish the Dress" session. I am still counting bug bites but had so much fun getting these gorgeous shots and we finally had SUN!!! Actually, I shouldn't say that,the sun came out for their first dance on their wedding day and shone down on them as if to light their way towards their future together.
It was a very special moment that I feel so honored to have shared with them. Thank you :).

Here is a "sneak" sneak peek from Saturday mornings session of me at work. My husband and family came to my rescue when I realized I had packed my flash away with my studio lighting from last weekend and not back where I normally keep it. Photographing in the depths of the woods just would not do with natural light only. He took this photo with his iphone. The lengths I will go to get a good photo :)... I had a blast and am still counting the bug bites and my blessings that I did not fall into the water with my equipment. The water was considerably higher then the last time I was there.

There is nothing better then frolicking in a warm summer rain shower after a few days of stifling heat. When the sounds of thunder faded this morning I decided to bring the girls out for some fun and fresh air. I just had to bring my camera along, which meant a bit of juggling...camera around neck, umbrella held above, a free hand to guide and eyes out the back of my head for my wandering children. One was apprehensive while the other was having the time of her life. Good times! Great memories!!

I had a little fun this evening with a photo concept I had for last Friday evenings TTD session. I saw this giant tree from afar and thought, wow, that looks like the tree of life and I instantly had an idea in my mind of a photo. When we actually got closer to it during the session the tree was gigantic! So immense that to get the whole tree in would cause a person to look like a spec underneath it. I thought I would turn this into a work of art. I miss painting...really, it has been too long since I picked up a paint brush and had the space and time to let my mind go to that special place that allows me to create. Photo Shop is a quick fix these days for me and will have to do while I enjoy my time with my girls while they are little.

Trash the Dress ~ Durham Region and Toronto Photographer

I scouted out a beautiful spot a few weeks ago that promised variety...beautiful greenery, flowing water, tall fields of wildflowers and grasses and lovely pathways. I just knew it would be perfect from afar for my second "Trash the Dress" session winner from February's contest. Little did I know that the pathways would be swarming with tiny red fire ants and just steps into the shade the mosquitoes would descend hungrily upon us. After some beautiful shots in the water and getting bit a few times each, I decided to switch locations. I am so glad we did! It was worth the drive for the breath taking views of lake Ontario and the CN tower far off in the distance. Thank you so much Kristen for modeling your dress for me and putting up with the bugs! You look absolutely radiant in these photos!

Currant Berry Goodness ~Durham Region Photographer

For the past two summers that we have lived here I have been dying to try this receipt out. We have a large, very productive currant berry tree in our backyard. The kids just love picking away at the berries and making all sorts of imaginary concoctions with them mixed with mud, water, grass, etc. It attracts all kinds of birds to our yard as well, most particularly the beautiful red cardinals that I can watch all day long if I could. I googled a receipt for the jam and I was brought back instantly to childhood memories of picking currants with my sisters and cousins for my grandma in North Bay and watching her make currant jam on their front porch. It was delicious from what I remember...I can't wait to try it out!! Currants tend to have a very tart bittersweet taste to them on their own. I was surprised to see the girls picking and munching on them in our backyard since they started to appear.

Yesterday we picked the berries, around 4 cups full. Today we cleaned them up, put them in a large pot, added 4 cups of sugar and let them simmer awhile at medium heat while mixing the sugar in. After it simmered a little we poured them into a ceramic bowl and put them in the fridge for tonight to let set. Tomorrow we will take them out, add a little lemon juice and pectin and hopefully put them in some mason jars that I have to search for this evening. This has been so much fun I am starting to consider other berry jams in our future ;).

I had the honor and privilege of photographing a wonderful couple on their special day last weekend. In the little time I have gotten to know the two of them I can tell how genuine they are and how much they are in love with each other. They have such caring and kind personalities and are so well suited to each other. Congratulations to the happy couple!! I look forward to our next session together =). Hopefully the rain will stay away this time as we have not had much luck. The rain clouds rolled in moments before their engagement session and the weather did not cooperate again last Saturday but that did not dampen either of their spirits. Happy Father's Day to all the father's out there and all the soon to be father's. Your role in your child or children's lives is no small one. They learn great things from you that you don't even realize. The quietude of just being with you is a comfort while you do your stuff, from hammering a nail to mowing the lawn or lighting a BBQ and watching a hockey game. I love hockey but do not know much about the game. I would sit with my dad while he was engrossed in a game and now as an adult the sounds are soothing. Don't ask me the score or what teams are playing though. Dad, thank you for everything you mean to me and all you have taught me. You passed on your love of nature and gardening to me and most certainly any talent I have I give you lots of credit for helping nurture it for me and believing in me. Lots of love to you today!

We have a yummy breakfast planned for the love of my life. Some french toast with strawberries and coffee then on to lunch with my dad and dinner with my dad-in-law. The girls are so excited for today! Well, one is while the other is still zzzzz away in dreamland. She loves to sleep in :). I don't blame her, learning all the new things each day is exhausting and 4 new teeth have appeared this week! Lots of work for such a wee little girl.

Cherish the Dress ~ Toronto and Durham Region Wedding Photographer

I had a blast yesterday evening photographing my very first "Trash the Dress" session with Stacey! I have been looking forward to these sessions for months and we couldn't have picked a better evening. The temperature and lighting were perfect. Stacey is happily married going on 8 years to the love of her life and is blessed with two beautiful children. We weren't on a mission to "Trash" her dress so much as show it off in all its glory after being trapped in storage for all those years and I don't think either one of them has changed a day from her wedding day after seeing some of her photos before our session. She is a beautiful woman and absolutely shines in her wedding dress! I am so glad that she was up for anything and didn't even mind getting her dress completely soaked at the end of our session getting water in her ear in the process.

Stacey and I met in a Lamaze class with Stephanie Antunes of Discover Birth Lamaze instruction 4 years ago. For all the expectant ladies out there, she is an excellent instructor and taking this class was so helpful for my experience with my first daughter and really helped my husband understand his role to assist me better in the process of child labour. It always amazes me how small a world we live in and how connected we are somehow. We stayed in touch and our second babes are mere months apart.

Growing Strong ~ Durham Region Photographer

I have the opportunity of some down time with all the girls napping. A very rare occasion these days. I am all set for my session this evening (can't wait!!) and enjoying a cup of tea. I thought I would work on some photos I took this week of our gardens after a rain fall. I rarely print these images but love to take them as a hobby. I think this is the best way to get something out of what I love to do by sharing the images with whoever reads my blog and hope that you find some joy in them too. I think one day I will start printing them and making blank greeting cards or art prints from them.

Lavender. I bought my very first lavender plant in Paris and had it growing on my window sill overlooking le Sacre Coeur. The smell is so nostalgic for me and I have since had to have a plant wherever I live. Just rub the leaves on your finger tips and the scent will help relax you. The scent is often used in fragrant oils for spa treatments.
A new rose bush just beginning to bloom. A special gift of three different varieties from a close friend. Thank you, they are beautiful!
Our sweetpeas are in their glory this week. A perennial we inherited from the previous owners and I just adore! I used them last year for one of my sessions and they were just perfect!

Our tomato plants are really taking off! I am hoping they do better then they did last year.

Our pepper plants...red, green and yellow. These are for my husband. He loves to BBQ them when they are harvested. Yum!
I am not quite sure what this plant is called but the purple blossoms come out in late spring and are gorgeous!

Sisterly Love ~ Durham Region Family Photographer

I had the opportunity of a free morning with my girls and decided to take them on a picnic. Abby was so excited that she wanted to bring her babies along which gave me the idea for the photos below. I was so happy to have the opportunity to try out my new prop, courtesy of my brother and sister-in-law. Thank you!! I LOVE IT!! It was perfect for today and I hope to have the opportunity to use it for newborn sessions in the future too. I just can't get enough of our Crazy Baby Accessories flower clip either. Thank you Sarah :).

Our girls can be found giving each other hugs and kisses all the time these days however the moments are fleeting and always pass as soon as the camera comes out. Our youngest is a busy girl and wanted nothing to do with a hug this morning from her sister but I still love these photos of the two of them. The look on her face crack's me up in the first one and the second, those pucker lips are so precious. Sisterly love. There is nothing like it!

I just had to share this lovely bouquet of flowers Abby picked from our tree this morning. It makes my heart sing to have her bring me flowers with a big smile painted on her sweet little face. I couldn't find a vase small enough to hold the short stems. They fit perfectly in her Winnie the Pooh mug and couldn't be more suitable. I couldn't share this without some beautiful Winnie the Pooh quotes to go along with them.

We had a lovely visit this weekend with my sister and her boyfriend. Both my girls fell instantly in love with him and I can see why my sister fell for him too :). They make an adorable couple together. My sister is going to have a bit of competition though, Abby was climbing all over him from the moment they arrived and has given him the title of BFF ;). Here are some photos I took of them while taking a stroll at a nearby park. The trees are so lush and vibrant now that they make for a gorgeous backdrop for outdoor sessions!

Keeping Cool in Durham Region ~ Durham Region Family Photographer

This morning we were in desperate need of some cooling down and Abby begged me to bring out the sprinkler despite already having her water table and kiddie pool out. I had to share these snapshots. The girls were both having so much fun together. These were taken with our trusty Canon P&S camera. I didn't feel safe mixing kids, water and my expensive camera to document their fun but am pleased with the images it captured as a result. I hope everyone is keeping cool today. We have our curtains and blinds drawn to keep the heat out and avoid turning on our AC for as long as possible. I think it is going to be a hot summer if we are already experiencing above 30 C temperatures in May.

The first shot below shows Abby's mischief from the weekend :(. She saw a tear and just couldn't help herself. I admit, I have been guilty of this with wallpaper before. So many things she shouldn't do mirror what I have done when I was little. It is pay back time ;). I hope their dresses got a good rinse in the process, they both managed to get watermelon juice all over them before hand.

Below, not too bad for a P&S but the sharpness and clarity is still not what I would like it to be for a close up like this. Still cute, I must say, but I am just a tad bit biased. I love the little tongue hanging out here xoxoxox.

"Childhood Dreams" ~Durham Region Children Photographer

I had fun this evening playing with one of the photos I took at the Orchard a couple of weeks ago of my girls and their friends at play. Those first friendships and bonds our children make in life are so enchanting and admirable. I wish it were that easy as adults to be able to be yourself like they are together. I love seeing their personalities shape by how they interact together.

I have decided to enter this photo into the latest Photographing Children Contest via Facebook for photos with the use of textures. Adobe is sponsoring this contest and the first prize is the latest version of Photoshop. Their are so many wonderful photographs and talented photographers participating that it was a little intimidating for me to even post this photo towards the contest. I had to give it a shot and really felt that this image was the essence of my little girls childhood friendships. It seems without fail during their play dates at our home or theirs they end up getting dressed up together into little princesses. When I took this shot they were playing "Ring Around the Rosy".

Catching Frogs and Caterpillars ~ Durham Region Location Photographer

We packed the girls up for a drive to visit my dear friend and her family yesterday afternoon. I have to admit, my husband and I are not good at planning and tend to do most of our adventures spur of the moment so I was happy that they were up for a visit. Sometimes life is more interesting to not have high expectations from plans in advance and the girls don't become as anxious before hand. Yesterday was a beautiful sunny spring day, perfect for an idyllic stroll down a country road where we all enjoyed being at one with nature.The girls loved catching frogs with their dad's and made a friend with a caterpillar on the way back. They even got to see a snapping turtle close up as it crossed the road. It wasn't very photogenic though so I left him or her out of my photo journal of our visit ;).

For those that know me well, you know how much I love frogs =). We just brought home an African frog for our fish tank last week and love to watch it swim around and it seems equally fascinated by us.

Our oldest girls get along famously together. You wouldn't know that they are almost a year apart when you see them playing side by side. They are practically the same height.

I had to get a recent shot of her baby girl before she starts crawling which may be any day now judging by how much she was rolling about while we were there. She is a sweetheart and gave lots of smiles for me while we were there but was not too sure what to make of my camera.

I came across this poem and thought, how suitable for the stage I am at with my young family and describes what my daily life is to a "T"...well, minus the iron board as I loathe anything to do with ironing ;). I was so happy to look at my girls after getting an extra half hour of sleep this morning and be greeted by joyful smiles of happiness by both when they saw me and a running hug and kiss from Abby. I feel so blessed and privileged to be their mom. They have kept me in the present at this sad time and give me such a sense of purpose in all I do.

I took these photos earlier this week while at my in-laws. Bleeding hearts are one of my favorite flowers from childhood. They will always remind me of my mom since I discovered them on my many walks with her. I was amazed that a flower was heart shaped and thought it was so poetic and pretty. Abby loves them too and cannot go near them without picking a couple to give to myself or her daddy.

As I got off the highway to meet this adorable couple, I commented to myself how amazing the weather and light was for our session. Mere minutes later the wind picked up and the sky changed into a brilliant grayish blue colour, threatening to rain. That didn't stop us from having fun tonight! They were so easy to work with and willing to try anything I suggested and get wet in the process. All in all we had a great time and I look forward to their special day next month! When my mother in law indicated that the blossoms were out I knew I had to try this with my girls. I really wanted to do this last year but Madison wasn't even standing yet. I managed to convince my neighbor that this would be fun. It was fun and well worth the effort! All in all the photos turned out lovely and the girls had a blast! I am going to share a couple from today of Madison that are just precious and I couldn't resist. I am praying that the blossoms hold onto the trees for as long as possible this week for a couple more sessions. This is such a beautiful and mystical spot. I wish they lasted longer.

Happy Earth Week everyone!

I have been taking little steps towards getting out for fresh air since my two have been under the weather for the past week with a spring fever and cold. We had a lovely morning walk and afternoon of yard work and making plans for our outdoor space and vegetable gardens. I see lots of tomatoes of different varieties in our future and thought I would try broccoli for the first time this year. We shall see. For me, I have always had a green thumb but mostly through trial and error.

I am a huge advocate for trying to protect our earth from harm. On our walk this morning I wanted to teach my daughters about litter and the benefits of doing our part and hopefully helped them understand why we don't litter. We managed to fill up two bags full of litter, broken glass, cans and debris. It was a good feeling to know that we have a cleaner neighborhood at least.

Before heading out this morning I managed to capture a couple of quick shots for the girls through the window. They were both very excited to see birds finally feeding at their home made bird feeder from one of our March crafts this week.

Just a reminder of my Mother's Day Face Book fan contest. Right as the symphony of flowers and bird songs started to really get under way over the past few days, our family has endured a challenging week unlike any I have ever experienced. As some of my readers know, I lost my mother over the weekend. I have been meaning to post a little tribute to her and to let my clients know that email response time will be a bit delayed for this reason. Losing someone close is always hard and I don't think anyone can fully prepare for it. I know she has gone to a better resting place and have come to terms with that, although a wave of emotion will hit me on occasion. We had a lovely service for her and got to see many family members and friends that we don't see often. I wish it was under better circumstances.

Mom, know that you will be in my heart always and in all I do there will be no day that I will not think of you. I will see your legacy in my children and pass on all of your loving ways you have taught me. I love you always.

Another Contest ~ Durham Region and Toronto Photographer

I hope that everyone enjoyed the sunshine we had for Easter weekend. Our first flowers bloomed in the front garden last week and the amount of buds sprouting on trees and pushing through the garden dirt is truly amazing. Thank you rain and thank you mother nature! Such a beautiful sight to see!

Oh spring, I love what you promise...flowers, rebirth, green and every colour imaginable is on its way along with warmer and longer days. That means more outdoor sessions!! Yeah!!! There is just something magical about babies, childhood, families and young love when combined with a beautiful garden or landscape or the harsh contrast of an urban backdrop when shooting outdoors. I find children and adults often loosen up more and become themselves outdoors as well. Being in front of a camera can definitely be daunting. I know how it feels and have always preferred to be the one taking the photos. For the sake of my children I do make an effort to get some snaps every now and then with me in them these days.

As promised, I am going to announce my giveaway for my FaceBook fan page. Small businesses are born everyday and the best way to shout it out and gain more business is through word of mouth advertising and referrals. I have come across many contest ideas since embarking on this journey almost a year ago and thought that it was time to do a Face Book Fan page contest to get more readers to my blog to see my work and know my business exists. I originally thought that I would do a giveaway once I reached 350 fans by Mother's Day and less then 2 weeks later I went from 260 fans to over 300! Dancing in the Rain ~ Durham Region and Toronto Children Photographer

This morning I got a burst of energy from getting an extra couple of hours of sleep then the night before and decided to get the girls dressed up for some fun in the rain before breakfast. To my surprise my three year old was very happy about it and agreed to put a pink and frilly princess like dress on for photos. =) Yup that is me smiling ear to ear!!! As some may know, she much prefers to be wearing her comfy clothes and digging in the dirt and playing with worms these days. She takes after me in that regard. There wasn't a tree I couldn't climb and the dirt was my playground when I was little. Well, it didn't stop her from trying to pick up worms during our little walk / photo shoot though.

Our Newest Black Bird ~ Durham Region and Toronto Newborn Photographer

As promised, I had to share a couple more from yesterday's session with baby Declan. We can't wait to see him again! The girls are all a buzz about their new cousin and while doing Easter egg decorating and colouring Abby has dedicated a couple of pictures for him. She says she wants a baby brother now...uh oh, if having a little baby fever after the visit didn't help ;). Now the smile I posted yesterday was absolutely adorable but can you believe that a 7 day old can laugh?! He must have loved the feel of that sheepskin throw or had the right amount of milk to give us these facial expressions!

My brother-in-law is a huge hockey fan and wanted to give this a try. I am happy with the results and judging by the little smile Declan gave us he may grow up to be a fan too!

Our newest little Black bird all cozy in Great Grandma's green cocoon she knit for me as a Christmas present. I am hoping to print one off for her this weekend as a surprise. I just know she will be thrilled that it is her own grandson that was the first to try it out!
I almost forgot to post a couple with the cutest knit hats courtesy of Crazy Baby Accessories! Declan did manage to get some shut eye during the session, which is a baby photographers dream.

Introducing Baby Declan ~ Toronto and Durham Region Baby Photographer

This is just a little pre-sneak peek from this afternoons session with my new baby nephew who is now just one week old today. Congratulations go out to the happy parents! He was so adorable and a pleasure to photograph and for me to get another chance to hold.

This was one of the very first shots I got on camera when we got started and I am thrilled to have captured these moments! Don't worry, there will be a bigger sneak peek on its way in the next few days as a break from all the Easter activities this weekend. We wish the three of you a sleep filled night tonight.

Crazy for Crazy Baby Accessories ~Durham Region Photographer

I am excited to share these adorable images from last nights session. The last time I photographed this gorgeous little model was when she was 2 weeks old. Now, over 8 months later, she is almost crawling and trying to walk when holding her mommy's hands. It is unbelievable how fast that first year flies and how quickly they grow! Her mommy is the very talented person behind Crazy Baby Accessories. These bonnets, adorable knit hats, pinafores, bloomers and dresses are all custom made in such beautiful designer material and are sure to get compliments. She offers a wide variety of custom made baby items and also makes adorable and very unique dolls and can match them to her outfits. I love the dolls so much I had to get one for Madison's birthday last year! Here are some of my favorite images from our session.

Blue Skies ~ Durham Region and Toronto Photographer

When I looked out the window this morning I was delighted to see the sun reflecting off the dew on the grass that is now starting to turn green again from the rain earlier this week. It was such a beautiful site that I had to grab my camera before rounding the girls up for a walk. Here are some of my favorite images from our morning walk. I was so happy to finally capture a robin. I don't know if it was me and my noisy clan but they are quite hard to capture on camera. Every time I would point my camera up at one hopping along it would fly away or turn its tail feathers towards me. I was quite pleased that this handsome fellow stayed in one spot long enough and the vibrant blue sky made for a gorgeous backdrop.

An afternoon at the beach ~ Toronto and Durham Region Photographer

Yesterday afternoon after nap time we managed to get out and go for a short drive to the beach with Matt. He had some minor surgery done in the early afternoon and needed the fresh air and distraction from the pain. Naturally I had to bring my camera along for the ride. The girls were in love with the sand, water and sun! It was enough to lift anyone's spirits, including the one in need of some spirit lifting :).

Here are some shots of the girls experiencing the beach in spring time. Abby managed to find some shells to collect in the sand and Madison had to experience the beach by tasting it ;). I have to thank Matt's old neighbour and Grandma for the beautiful poncho's the girls are wearing. Abby's was a gift to her a couple of years ago and the poncho and hat was a handmade gift given to Madison this Christmas from her Great Grandma, known to them as "GG".

I let Matt have free reign of the camera while I tried to round the girls up for a photo and this was what he got before Abby took off. She was so excited to be there that she wanted nothing to do with photos that involved staying still. Matt is getting quite good with the camera and his candid shots are always fun and true to the moment. Last night both girls had no problems going down to sleep and Abby was out before I could finish a second story. That is unusual for her as she is normally begging for more and more books to postpone bedtime for as long as possible.

I thought I would try something out with the colours I knew would be so vibrant in the sun and am quite pleased with how they turned out.

I had to post one with Matt from yesterday too :). A little tribute to spring and to wish him a very Happy Birthday tomorrow!!

A little sunshine and growth ~ Durham Region and Toronto Area Photographer

It is such a gorgeous day today! I hope that everyone is getting a chance to soak in the suns rays even if it is for a little walk outside for those of you at work. I was planning a trip to the beach this morning with the girls and my camera but it didn't go as planned with my unpredictable 1 year and mischievous 3 year old. I opted for a more quiet day and nap time instead. That didn't stop me from taking my camera out and exploring what this beautiful weather has brought us around our home. We had a picnic on the deck for lunch and I saw my second robin hopping around our front yard this morning. I am surprised I haven't seen more around but maybe they are smarter and know of some colder weather on its way? I hope not. Here are some some more signs that spring is here even if the official date is this Saturday.
